I Have To Not Get Fired!

Are you a web programmer familiar with LAMP stack and want to work from home? Please fill out an application here! Full time job, salaries range from around $1,000-$6,000/month.
As a person dedicated to personal development and growth, I oftentimes notice things within myself that aren’t quite congruent with the person I’d like to be. It’s these times that offer the most opportunities for growth and change, which I’ll share with you now:
As I ended a conversation with a friend of mine yesterday, I noticed that I ended the conversation with something along the lines of “I have to get to work! I need to not get fired!”
I hadn’t thought much of it previously, but then as I read the book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People on my train ride to work, my thoughts focused on my own behaviors. Suddenly, I realized what a horrible thought process this was! Essentially, what I am saying in this situation is that I am going to work not to do work, but to make sure that there’s a reason that my boss won’t fire me.
What does that imply about the amount of work that I will do at work? What does that imply about applying my full resources to help further the goals of the organization? Of course I won’t be getting much done!
That has indeed been the case, as I focused on my business endeavors and spent a lot of timing talking with friends at work. After all, that is exactly what I do at home! I went to work to not get fired right? So it would appear that I have gone to work just to do the things I do at home, so as to be physically there, but not actually contributing anything.
An important note is that while I was joking in that particular sentence, even that is an indication of my thought processes. After all, if that idea wasn’t in my mind, then I would never have said it. Therefore, pay attention and be careful what you joke about. In my experience, it’s the beginning of you starting to become that exact thing.
Of course, realizing this, I have an amazing opportunity to grow. Self awareness is indeed one of the best qualities of being human! The truth is, I really should be going to work to help a group of people who have shown that they cared about me in the past. Not only that, but I’ll be creating a part of the software that will be used by millions of people. It sure seems very aligned with my purpose of helping people to make a good product. Plus, it’s fun!

Hi,
I totally agree what you had said and the statement I heard that says “What you says speaks to yourself” is an exact example of what you have written. A lot of people ignore the fact that they have always been consciously saying negative things to negate themselves but they never realise that in the long run, it will become their true reality.
Its the self development which is responsible for one’s success in life. What is important is one has to realize his mistakes and identify his weak zones and reverse the effect by improving those area. Nobody can stop him then by becoming a super achiever
